What Traits Make You an Entrepreneur?

The word “entrepreneur” is tossed around a lot lately in the media.

You see on TV someone who has “made it” and everyone wants to know their secret to success. They think if they can just figure out what this person did, they can be successful too.

However, being an entrepreneur isn’t rocket science.

In fact, you most likely already have the qualities of an entrepreneur. You just have to recognize the potential that is there.

A Vision of Future Potentials

One quality shared by all entrepreneurs is that they start out with a vision. They have a real knack for being able to see what others can’t see.

For example, the ability to recognize an opportunity to generate income that others have either ignored or don’t see for themselves. Or, they may have a vision for the future and the potential that it holds. This could be introducing a new product, idea, or service.

Remember when smartphones were a revolutionary concept? Now everyone has one in their pockets!

It takes someone with vision to be able to see several steps down the road what the possibilities can be.

An Ability to Stay Focused

Entrepreneurs have an ability to stay focused on their goals. This is true whether they are starting out with their own small business or running a large company.

Even if life throws them a few curve balls, entrepreneurs have an unceasing drive to achieve their goals and fulfill their vision.

They may suffer a financial loss, personal setbacks, or hit dead ends. Yet, their tenacious focus still compels them to move forward.

A Thick Skin to Negativity

Because they possess this vision and drive, entrepreneurs experience their fair share of naysayers. People will tell them, “You can’t do that,” or, “That’s impossible!”

It takes someone who has a thick skin who can shrug off this negativity and still stay committed to their vision and goals.

Think for a moment about a time in your life when you were told that something couldn’t be done, yet you still stuck to your guns. That is the entrepreneurial spirit at work!

A Love for What You Do

Because of the energy that it takes to pursue the life and work of an entrepreneur, you have to love what you do.

Remember, for entrepreneurs, a workday isn’t “9-5.” They love what they do and want to share their work with the world. This is true for the small business owner who is devoted to their craft as well as for the large-scale investor.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, passion for your work must drive you to be the best at what you do, and to put in the long hours necessary to be successful. Otherwise, your work is just a job where you show up for the paycheck and nothing more.

A Capability to Communicate Effectively

It’s no good for an entrepreneur to want to create something when they can’t communicate that to other people.

Of course, you’ll need to be able to reach out to potential customers so as to convert that interest into a sale. Moreover, communication skills are also necessary when dealing with other merchants, professionals, contractors, and of course, employees.

This is not just about the nuts-and-bolts of things. It is about being able to communicate your vision to others in a way that they want to join you on the journey.

When you look at these qualities and think about it, entrepreneurs share traits with many successful people in our world. You may even recognize several of these qualities in yourself.

If you don’t, take heart. These are skills that you can learn over time.
